Two Cousin's Hard Work Pays Off
Steve and Ed are two cousins bonded with a passion for cars. In 1985, at the age of only 19, they opened a one bay service garage in Weymouth, Ma at 1373 Washington ST. They simply named it S & E auto. With very little capital, a few hand tools and a strong work ethic their journey began. Word quickly spread that they were honest and fair and the business began to grow. They expanded to three bays and began to buy, fix and sell a few lower end vehicles to add some additional income. As business expanded, they soon found themselves doing more selling than repair.
In 1993 they secured their first bank loan and began buying much newer, low-mile vehicles. They would recondition them to like new condition and sell them at great prices. The inventory quickly grew from only 5 cars to more than fifty; Ed says they were the first independent dealer in the area to deal with such high quality cars. Business was so good that they moved down the street to 1255 Washington and now had fifteen employees. Looking toward the future, in 1999, they decided to open a second location in Walpole. They found a building for sale at 575 Boston-Providence Hwy., Route 1 across from Walmart and began offering the same high quality low mile vehicles to Route 1 Automile shoppers who preferred the low pressure sales approach they have become known for.
In the late 1990's they took to the airwaves in what Ed says was just a joke at first. A local cable sales rep offered them a fifteen minute spot on TV to highlight their cars, sort of infomercial style, not expecting much they gave it a try. To everyone's surprise it was a huge success, so much in fact that Steve and Ed formed a new company known as CARTIME which had over four hours of cable air time each weekend. While We have stopped producing new shows for television, we are currently exploring restarting the program and expanding to new media opportunities, like Facebook Live.
In 2006 the Mitsubishi franchise previously owned by Ernie Boch became available; the territory fit into the Walpole location so they quickly worked out a deal with Mitsubishi Motor Company to acquire the franchise. Walpole Mitsubishi (a division of S & E auto) was the new name for the Route 1 location. They loved the product and had great success over the years selling them pre-owned to their customers and friends. They are as good as any Japanese vehicle on the market with a better warranty and lower cost according to Steve and people we have sold them to love them. They were awarded the Mitsubishi Diamond Chapter of Excellence Award soon after and quickly became one of the top dealers in the district.
The company currently has many employees and has become known as one of the most reputable dealers anywhere. Ed was a past president of MIADA (Mass Independent Auto Dealers Association) and is proud to be instrumental in passing legislature to make dealers become bonded to protect the consumers. He says his goal is to improve the image of used car dealers and promote fair business practices by educating the dealer principals. The Weymouth location of S & E auto just expanded in 2014. The state of the art sales and service facility now has almost 3 acres and an additional 15,000 sq ft service and reconditioning department, they now stock over two hundred new and pre-owned vehicles. S & E Auto Sales may now be the largest independent dealership on the South Shore and will continue to grow.
They say the years between 2008 and 2012 were difficult, but the next five years look extremely bright for high quality used car sales due to the massive supply of off lease, late model, low mile vehicles that will flood the market over the next several years.
